I was born on a secluded island on the North Atlantic coast, that the local Lenape Tribe called “Manna-hatta”, the day after the Dodgers played their last game at Ebbets Field. My earliest memory was being smacked on the butt to the sounds of “That’ll Be The Day” by Buddy Holly & The Crickets. It was then I decided to get into radio.
Fast forward 20 years and failed attempts at becoming an astronaut and professional baseball player.
Like Bruce Springsteen before me, I was asked to leave Ocean County College in Toms River New Jersey, but not before I made my mark on the radio station there. Actually more like several “cigarette” burns on the carpet. My fate was sealed.
My professional radio career began at a small station in Ship Bottom, NJ. That’s “Ship” with a “P” but sometimes it was hard to tell the difference. Other stops included Atlantic City, Columbus, Philadelphia, New York City, Yuma and finally winding up in Phoenix, where I plied my tawdry trade at 98.7 The Peak, 95.5 The Coyote and 100.7 KSLX.
When I’m not on the radio, I like to spend time with my wife and pets (more than a few cats and 1 mutt), eat bacon cheeseburgers or spaghetti and watch X-Files, Californication, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Letterkenny or West Wing. I have man-crushes on David Duchovny and Aaron Sorkin.
I’m a fan of the NY Mets, Cleveland Browns (yes, I was dropped on my head as a baby), D-Backs, Coyotes, Mercury, Blue Jackets and NY Rangers.
Movies I watch over and over are: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Buckaroo Bonzai, all the Men In Blacks, all the Bournes except the latest one (disappointing), Godfather 1 & 2 and Big Trouble In Little China.
When it comes to music, I know no bounds; Elton John, Billy Joel, Jethro Tull, Pretenders, Queen, Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, Warren Zevon, David Bowie, Van Halen, Badfinger, Todd Rundgren, Chicago, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, Bruce (first 5 albums), Grand Funk, Moody Blues, Lou Reed, The Carpenters (that’s right, I said it, I meant it, I’m here to represent it), Steely Dan, Renaissance, Clapton, Frampton, Joan Armatrading, Steve Forbert, Al Stewart, Harry Nilsson, Bob Dylan, The Band, Joan Baez, Cat Stevens, Diana Ross, O’Jays, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight, 5th Dimension, Santana, Stevie Wonter, The Police, Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Squeeze, 10cc, Genesis, Alice Cooper, Heart, ELP, Yes, King Crimson, Roxy Music, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Carole King, Berlin, Patsy Cline, The Motels, The Tubes, B52s, Sabbath, Doors, everyone else that isn’t Debbie Boone and of course Led Zep, Who, Stones and Beatles (both individually and collectively).
There are tons more and I’m sure I missed some, so help me out. Email me with your favs!
